When did the Calgary Flames join the NHL?

The Calgary Flames were originally founded in 1972 and located in Atlanta, Georgia. However, they relocated to Calgary in 1980. Just five years after relocating, they made their first Stanley Cup Finals appearance, and eventually won their first (and only) championship at the end of the 1988-89 season, defeating the Montreal Canadiens.

Where do the Calgary Flames play?

The Calgary Flames play their games at the Scotiabank Saddledome, located in the southeast end of downtown Calgary, in Stampede Park. With 19,289 seats, the sellout crowds fill the arena regularly. However, while the Saddledome is one of the oldest NHL arenas and due for a replacement soon, local politicians have resisted calls for it to be taxpayer-funded. In 2019 it was announced by the city council the approval of a $550 million replacement, likely to be located north of the current location, in the Victoria Park neighborhood. Construction is expected to begin in 2021.

Without a doubt, the number one rival of the Calgary Flames are the Edmonton Oilers, their divisional rivals.
